Training.

Training users has been part of my job for twenty years, on Clarity PPM as in project management. This page gathers my view of training that works, and the links and tools I recommend to design it, learn and remember.

The vision

What makes good training.

  • Start from the job

Useful training starts from a real task: what the person will have to do on Monday morning, in their tool, with their data.

  • Do rather than show

Fewer slides, more guided exercises. People remember what they did themselves, not what they watched someone do.

  • Test yourself to remember

Asking yourself questions and revisiting ideas at spaced intervals anchors better than rereading. A few questions at the end of a session, then a week later.

  • Leave a trace

Short sheets, two-minute videos, step-by-step procedures: what remains available after the training matters as much as the session.

Learn about AI

My field: projects and Clarity

With AI

What AI changes.

  1. 01

    Prepare

AI drafts an outline, exercises and questions from an existing procedure; the trainer reviews and corrects.

  2. 02

    Personalise

Each participant can ask an assistant questions between sessions, at their own pace.

  3. 03

    Practise

Case studies generated on demand, and role plays where AI plays the client or the user.

  4. 04

    Measure

Analyse quiz answers to spot misunderstood ideas and adjust the next session.

Caveats

Stay in control.

  • Review what AI produces. A mistake in training material repeats with every participant.
  • Protect the data. No client or internal data in a public AI service: anonymised examples are enough.
  • Independent links. No partnership or sponsored link: these are personal recommendations.
